Improving PCB Plating Surface Cleanliness by Particle Elimination Leading to Increased Yields
Pall plating filters keep the plating substrate and plating process reliable in the manufacturing of PCB’s (Printed Circuit Boards). Effective filtering reduces defects that affect the atomically smooth coating on the plated surface and expel contaminants to keep the plating surface sterile in order to prevent interference with the PCB’s performance. Impurities like soft gel particles are eliminated that decrease the hardness of the substrate and reduce the PCB’s resistance to corrosion. Common defects like flaking, blistering, and micropitting are eliminated with Pall’s filtering solutions. Implementing efficient filter systems keep process and plating rates stable and reduce downtime from defect excursions. Pall’s Polypropylene Filter line offers excellent chemical compatibility and customization for many different PCB plating processes. Pall can recommend an appropriate filter using operating conditions of the process and characteristics of the process gases such as fluid properties, fluid type, temperature, pressure, and required removal rating. An optimal filter media can then be recommended using the type of fluid to be filtered (viscosity, solids concentration) and removal ratings as a guide. Two different types of media can be recommended. Pleated filters are formed using a pleated cylinder polypropylene filter media and exhibit low differential pressures. Depth media filters are constructed by depositing fibrous material onto a rotating center core and forming a tapered pore structure. Depth filters are known for their long service life and offer highly cost effective performance for PCB plating applications.
Nexis® T Series Filter Cartridges are engineered with a proprietary CoLD Melt™ fiber technology that offers a continuous gradient pore structure media providing both pre-filtration and final filtration. The Proprietary center core also offers greater mechanical strength and chemical resistance (0.5 - 10 μm) than traditional gas filters. Another key feature is the filters resistance to contaminant unloading even at high differential pressures. The computer controlled CoLD Melt™ manufacturing process increases product consistency leading to reliable operation. The polypropylene media construction is a thermally bonded structure that does not employ adhesives making it more environmentally friendly than traditional filters. Plastic and metal spring assembly end configurations are available.
